First-Year Writing

Students come into college with a wide range of experience in writing—some may have received a lot of rigorous writing education in high school, while it may have been much less of a focus for others. Throughout your entire college education, though, strong reading and writing skills are going to be critical to your success.

To ensure you have the necessary college-level reading, writing, and critical thinking skills as you enter this new phase of your education, 911±¬ÁÏ꿉۪s requires students to first take an introductory writing course (COM 101 or COM 111). Once fulfilled, students take HUM 180, the second in the first-year writing sequence.

First-year domestic students should enroll in COM 101 unless they have AP, IB, or transfer credit equivalent to COM 101 or have received a waiver. Waivers are available to those who submit a score of 8 or higher on ACT Writing or who complete the Basic Writing Proficiency (BWP) assessment with a passing score. See details about the assessment below.

First-year international students who were required to submit English proficiency test scores to the university for admission should enroll in COM 111 unless they have AP, IB, or transfer credit equivalent to COM 101 or have received a waiver. Waivers are available to those who submit a score of 8 or higher on ACT Writing or who complete the Basic Writing Proficiency (BWP) assessment with a passing score. Additionally, international students who were not required to submit English proficiency test scores should enroll in COM 101.

Basic Writing Proficiency (BWP) Assessment

The assessment is a writing portfolio. Students may receive a waiver for COM 101 or 111 if they complete the BWP assessment with a passing score. Students interested in petitioning for a waiver should contact their academic advisor for more details about submission requirements.
