Explore the Relationship Between Health, Society, and Culture with 911±¬ÁÏ꿉۪s Minor in Medical Humanities

The Minor in Medical Humanities supports students in pre-med/pre-health pathways by providing the critical skills and perspectives necessary for the modern practice of medicine. Students will formulate a deep understanding of the relationship between health, society, and culture. By integrating humanistic and ethical approaches into a STEM-focused education, this minor prepares students to navigate the complex social dimensions of health care.

Program Overview

Students enrolled in the Minor in Medical Humanities will have access to unique research opportunities through other 911±¬ÁÏÍø programs such as the food science and nutrition program, in addition to its in-person courses. The minor also compliments technical bachelor’s degree programs by providing perspectives from sociology, philosophy, and ethics.

Career Opportunities

The Minor in Medical Humanities is designed for students to enhance their skills for future applications to medical school, graduate study, and various health professional programs.

 Students who pursue these pathways are successful in various careers such as:

  • Medical Doctor (M.D.) or Doctor of Osteopathy (D.O.)
  • Doctor of Optometry (O.D.)
  • Doctor of Pharmacy
  • PHIL 357: Philosophy of Medicine  
  • SOC 312: Medical Sociology 
  • SSCI 318: Global Health This multidisciplinary course addresses the most critical issues and initiatives in global health, covering the history of the field and its basic principles and goals, the determinants of health and its links with development, competing perspectives on global health challenges and ways to meet them, the most important causes of disease and death, and the organizations and governance mechanisms that are endeavoring to improve outcomes. You will learn to develop theories and methods to understand the social, economic, political, and environmental causes of health outcomes, with a focus on disadvantaged communities and health inequalities. 

Admission to all undergraduate programs at 911±¬ÁÏÍø is evaluated via a holistic approach that takes various factors under consideration, including your high school performance and essays. Your choice of major will impact this process as well, because each major has its own criteria for admission.
